SPECIAL REPORT--BLOODSHED IN TORONTO: WHO'S KILLING TORONTO RAPPERS AND WHAT MAKES YOU A RAPPER IN CANADA?

Snapshot of Canada's national paper The National Post (Toronto Edition) on the arrest of Rapper Preszidenteeh
When you have a story like alleged serial killer Mark Garfield Moore flashing cash and walking around a very expensive house shouting out his pals including Rapper/Producer Mayhem Morearty (Kevin Williams), one of Toronto's finest that even worked with Drake and Kardinal Offishall in their aspiring days, it amazes you that Williams is now an alleged armed robber per the police. In this piece, I am writing about a little known tragedy that keeps getting worse in the largest city in Canada and the music hub of the north. It's the MURDERS of aspiring rappers in Toronto. Ask any news Assignment Editor and the next black male gunned down was an aspiring rapper. Behind that title are young black dudes, homies, fathers, brothers, sons and grandsons. That bullet often goes very far. It hits the whole community. We are all torn apart!
Rapper deaths in Toronto:

-Tony Trapz, also known as Anthony Spencer, January 21, 2012 shot
-Wizzle, also known as Jamahl Franklin, January 2, 2012 shot
-KD, also known as Andrew Stewart, June 16, 2011 shot
-DJ Platnum, also known as Shane Williams, March 2, 2011 shot
-Kartel, also known as Donald Richard Grant, November 7, 2010 shot
-Philly Blunts, also known as Andrew Dowden, July 30, 2010 shot
-Splitz or Codeine, also known as Chris Tshilombo, July 23, 2010 shot
-Yung Mecca, also known as Ludlow Gillespie, stabbed in a domestic dispute. May 29, 2010.
-Meyend Tricks, also known as Michael George, July 29, 2007 shot
-Blits, also known as Kareme Parks, October 9, 2006 shot

There has been a lot of anger in the hip-hop community of Toronto, Canada lately but I'm not hearing the voices of our mainstream rappers go after this EVIL. MURDERS! When Drake's album came out in 2011, I read the Los Angeles Times quoting Canada as not having any good MC's anyway, basically dissing Canadian rappers. "First off, he’s from Canada, just like Justin Bieber, and the country is hardly known for producing great MCs."

I have lived here for almost 5 years and America 29. One thing I can tell you is that it is not really lack of talent but mostly plenty of hating. It is particularly bad within Toronto rappers. This "hating" behaviour stems deep from the street rappers also known as "aspiring" rappers. They tend to make and sell more mixtapes, record mostly "gangsta" type rap music glorifying guns, gangs, drugs and anti-police sentiments.

With the freedom of speech act, anyone can really sing what they want but most of these rappers don't seem to notice that to be like Drake or any other mainstream rapper out there getting TV airplay, reality shows and endorsements, they have to mainstream their music and take out the "parental advisory" content. Advertisers and even several music networks are not interested in marketing these concepts of rapping about your life history on the streets anymore.

I however separate Canadian rappers as they all have their different personalities. The "902" rappers are mostly white, they don't kill each other and produce a lot of award winners. 902 is the area code for Halifax, Nova Scotia. Yes they have lots of ghettos in Scotia but with Rappers and DJ's Classified, Ghetto Child, Kayo, DJ Scratch Bastid and even R&B singer JRDN (who btw grew up in a tough section of Toronto called Jane and Finch before moving to Halifax as a child) all keep the good name of Halifax. Toronto rappers are more consumed in jealousy that one prominent mainstream rapper/singer Ferreira, a Portuguese Canadian rapper/singer labeled the word "Hater" H.A.T.E.R.S=Having Anger Towards Everyone Reaching Success!

Rene Velez Lau- "Bake the 38" (Sentenced to 5 years for rapping about his guns-Historical ruling some say kills free speech)

(New) Ammo aka Lamar Skeete-A wannabe rapper sentenced to life for killing anti-gang activist Kenneth Mark.

The younger artists end up wanting to mimick what the aspiring gangsta rappers spit. Have we not learned any lessons from ATL Rapper Ludacris' performance in Ethiopia when opening for Beyonce about 5 years ago? They booed Luda off stage as they don't like hearing rappers sing about their life histories and all that "ghetto" life in that African country.

Look at the seizure above as I sit on the floor at a recent news conference. Full coverage in my HOMICIDE FACEBOOK PAGE. I have seen Toronto rappers as young as 14 rapping about violence and even with the latest police gang sweep netting 67 mostly young people, there were 10 young offenders in that sweep (not listed) as anyone under 18 is not named in Canada. Can u imagine your kid's name released to the media and public like this. Try getting a job when some employer has seen your name on the list of doom!! 27 guns, $110,000 in cash and a lot of drugs. The youngest gang member was 14 and the oldest 94, a great grandma who said she had no knowledge of her great grandson stashing weapons in the house. Many were released on bail while police is desperately trying to reconnect with many young people in the community.

Yes, rap music is fueling gun violence in Toronto, Canada, but explaining it further: Are the activities of rappers causing the motives? Not necessarily. I had an unplanned twitter session with Grammy winning Producer to Drake and several other artists Boi1da real name Matthew Samuels. He is a very humble person and to see his displeasure at Toronto's CP24 breaking news channel caught my attention. Responding to the tweet above to Boi1da, I told him that these kids are technically "rappers." They have YouTube videos netting 8000-12,000 hits full of gangsta rap.

Eventually our twitter back and forth conversation ended up with the tweet below which it's retweets has since increased. One of those RT's was from a familiar source, Toronto Crime Stoppers who follows me @HipHossip after KJ's hit Crime Stopper's hip-hop song and the PSA's I help organize with police with some aspiring rappers hooking them with Toronto's leading Urban Top 40 radio stations Flow 93.5FM and Z103.5FM.

Another familiar person was Officer Scott Mills who is the Social Media officer for Toronto Police. He saw my tweet to Boi1da and saw the link to the Global News interview I did last week on why rappers in Toronto never talk after a murder leaving homicide officers stuck and a killer walking free. That tweet from Samuels was VERY powerful and sent a big message from a powerful global figure in the music business.

Below is the video of the press conference that Det/Sgt Gary Giroux had detailing the crime and appeal from Susan Spencer the rapper's sister. Her appeal to the so called friends who took him to the hospital really baffles me. They see him killed and just "dropped him" off at the ER! It took surveillance outside that hospital to actually get those "friends" to come forward but the detective says they were all lying to him and "far from truthful." When the shooting happened, cops did not know the crime scene till later and it took a couple of more days to secure a warrant. Evidence could have been damaged already and now all Dungeon Studio's videos on YouTube are marked "private."

An update from Toronto Police today 1/31/12 confirms that the three drive by shootings last weekend in Malvern is directly related to the murder of Rapper Tony Trapz, Anthony Spencer. They also released an audio call from a female subject calling for a cab and a video of 2 males and that female who called herself "Ashley" to the cab company she ordered from.

To me personally, those two males who are now in custody on an unrelated Toronto Police Guns and Gangs unit charge are "presumed" to be the alleged killers of Rapper Anthony Spencer but cops need the young lady to come forward as a witness. “She’s got a difficult choice to make,” he said. “She’s either a witness” or part of the murder, Det/Sgt Giroux said.

I'm thinking these homies did those drive bys but police are NOT commenting on that since it will compromise their investigation. One reporter even asked at the news conference. Sadly I can't show you any of Spencer's videos. They are now marked "private" on YouTube on Dungeon Studio's page where most of them were promoted. Why hide free speech?
KJ met one of his rap Idols "L'il Jon" backstage at a concert last Summer and they did dinner together. They should be seeing good things their mentors are doing. The first thing he asked the ATL rapper was about the $$$ Apprentice episodes..lol. Violence is not the way. Is this what we want the younger rappers of the future to keep seeing? It's giving rap music a bad name! Remember Nov 2010, when KJ spoke to the Toronto media about rappers taking guns off their music? All these youngsters want to rap be it a hobby or a career. You have to lead by example.
Can we all learn from KJ's diss video dedication to me?? Pls watch "My Mom's a Snitch" At 9, my son wrote and rapped his own song about Crime Stoppers after he learned that my name was @Snitchlady on Twitter.
This video was featured and tweeted on Toronto Police's 3 Facebook pages including the TAVIS page above. KJ is gonna be 12 and he will be auditioning for the "X -Factor" when we go down to his country (USA) this summer. He will be "rapping" like Astro did. You can lift up your talent in this genre without violent lyrics. KJ was also featured in the BIG upcoming video of the #3 rapper in Canada in a major role. He rapped 2 verses. Stay tuned for that on MuchMusic and MTV Canada. This rapper is always on those channels and you know him.

My advice to all young rappers is to STOP this culture of rapping about GUNS, GANGS and DRUGS! Pls SHARE this story on all your social networks. --Written by MsKemi Jan 31st 2012. Follow me @Snitchlady @HipHossip @MyYoungToronto

BLOODBATH ON THE X-FACTOR TALENT SHOW AS SIMON FIRES THE FEMALE JUDGES AND HOST.

Judges Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul as well as host Steve Jones have all been axed from 'The X Factor'. Remember after the season finale when show boss Simon Cowell said he is keen to "take the show in a different direction", I told you there was going to be a BLOODBATH and that has happened.

The only guaranteed person next season to sit at that table is record producer L.A. Reid. Sources are telling me that Mariah Carey is coming after all and that Paula just heard TODAY! Lets wait and see. It's all about the money money money. Bring in Ryan Seacrest. lol.

CORY GUNZ APOLOGIZES TO FANS ON GETTING ARRESTED FOR GUN POSSESSION.

Rapper CORY GUNZ has apologised to his fans for letting them down following his weekend arrest for gun possession. The 6 Foot 7 Foot star, real name Peter Pankey, Jr., was taken into custody by police in New York on Saturday (28Jan12) after allegedly finding a loaded pistol in his backpack.

He was held overnight and logged on to his Twitter.com account upon his release on Sunday (29Jan12) to express his regret at his behaviour.

He tweeted, "I apologize to all of my Supporters, Friends and Family. Things Happen, No excuses. My only regret is letting ya’ll (sic) down… Peace". Gunz is facing up to three-and-a-half years behind bars if convicted for illegal possession of a loaded weapon. Too late for KJ who has given up and says he's not interested in Gunz music anymore and besides "his logo still has pistols in them." What can I say? These rappers will not learn. SMH.

DIZZEE RASCAL TO REPLACE SNOOP DOGG AT AUSTRIAN FESTIVAL

DIZZEE RASCAL will replace SNOOP DOGG on the bill of this spring’s (12) Snowbombing festival in Austria after the U.S. rapper scrapped his upcoming European tour dates. The Drop It Like It’s Hot hitmaker was to be the main headliner at the Mayrhofen festival in April (12), alongside Fatboy Slim and The Vaccines, but he pulled out of the event earlier this month (Jan12) and now British hip-hop star Rascal can’t wait to take his place.

He says, "I can’t wait to get back to Snowbombing, the last time was wicked but this time will be even better headlining the Forest stage. I’ve got a few new ones (songs) to try out on you and this time I’m actually going to learn to snowboard!"

IS RAP MUSIC A LOSER GENRE AT THE GRAMMY AWARDS?

Me and FloRida, a fairly new rapper in the game.

The Associated Press reports via Toronto's CP24 that since its beginnings in the 1970s, rap music has transformed from an underground, street-based sound to a definitive part of pop culture, transcending race and becoming one of the strongest -- and most prolific -- voices of today's generation. But at the Grammy Awards, rap has had a long-lasting losing streak in the top categories.

The hip-hop sound -- first recognized at the 1989 Grammys -- has garnered numerous prestigious nominations over the years, and for 10 of the last 14 years, rap acts have either led or tied for most Grammy nominations. But rarely will a hip-hop act win one of the show's top four honours -- album, song and record of the year, along with best new artist. Instead, rap acts tend to win rap awards.

STEVEN TYLER SCREECHES THE AMERICAN NATIONAL ANTHEM AT THE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.

All I can say is take a look at the coaches and some of the players faces. I rolled off the floor and just said "stick to the Idol judging."Tyler’s rendition was off-key in places, screechy in most others and he messed up a lyric — it’s “the bombs bursting in air,” not “as bomb bursting in air.” Though he does get rock star fashion points for the festive scarf he was sporting to support his team, the AFC champion New England Patriots.

GLOBAL TV NEWS CONTACTS ME TO GET MY OPINION ON THIS ONGOING TORONTO RAP MUSIC BLOODSHED AND THE WALL OF SILENCE THAT GOES WITH IT.

Police aren’t catching much of a break with this case as friends of the slain rapper aren’t revealing many details to investigators.

“The individuals that we are interviewing … are being far less than truthful with regards to the narrative of what happened,” Det-Sgt. Gary Giroux said at a press conference on Sunday.

“If everybody came back to us and told us exactly what they have heard or know with their own senses, I think we could resolve this case very quickly,” he added.

One prominent community advocate and hip hop blogger says that “snitching” or to be an informer is “a street code” promoted to young people.

“It’s not so much a fear of retribution but a fear of their reputation,” says HipHossip.com blogger-founder Kemi Omololu-Olunloyo. “Even the rapper himself, rapped it in his music,” referring to the song “Gunz, Money, Drugz,” one of his music videos on YouTube with over 8,000 clicks.

“The reason is because of street credibility. The mix tapes sell on the street,” she says, adding that although a record deal might not be signed, it is through the streets that young artists gain notoriety.

Omololu-Olunloyo, who volunteers with Toronto police, helped organize a rally with Toronto-area hip hop artists in November 2010, denouncing gun crimes in the city. An outspoken critic of gun crimes, she said she has testified in a quadruple shooting case in the U.S. and credits the American justice system in helping solve some but not all gun crimes.

“It’s time that Canadians start to do the right thing and what’s morally right to help police with their investigation,” she says.

“They can use CrimeStoppers IF they’re declining to be interviewed. That’s the difference between Canada and America. In America, you have to talk.” READ THE REST HERE.

Here's the real sad part of all this story. Spencer whom I DID NOT know personally rapped about blunts, robberies, home invasions, jewelry, guns and his young daughter and I also heard this rapped in one of his videos 2:35-2:38 "I leave you dead you don't snitch nigga." The aspect of free speech must always exist in music but when do we draw the line in 2012. Times are changing. Music networks are avoiding any form of gangsta rap. Truly sad that his so called friends had to dump him in a hospital and leave. Police had to appeal for them to come forward!!

It's time his friends start snitching and helping police solve his MURDER. In a video he portrayed as a "Public Service announcement", he talked about "shooting" whoever uses his name. He also asked his nigga "Silence" another rapper in jail to be freed. His music had the online presence for the young gangsta rap fans on YouTube and Twitter. Sadly, we have seen too many of these murders before.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family especially his daughter. This is NOT the life to live in the name of free speech. If you know anything pertinent to the info, contact the Detective Sergeant Gary Giroux at 416−808−7387. What matters now is that Trapz shooter is out there and we the public are not safe.

BIG CONGRATS: 'X Factor' Alumni Chris Rene, Marcus Canty, Astro all Sign With Epic Records.

Astro, Marcus and Chris: Credits X-Factor USA

EPIC proportions as Epic Records has now signed them all!! Canada could not vote but we know good artists when we see them.

Melanie Amaro may have landed a $5 million recording contract after winning "The X Factor," but the talent competition has produced deals for several of her former competitors.

Second runner up Chris Rene, as well as Top 10 finalists, R&B crooner Marcus Canty and teenage hip hop star Astro, have signed with Epic Records (also Melanie's label), the imprint announced on Wednesday.

"I've dreamt about this momentous moment my whole life and now it's here," Chris, who made fans in his audition with his original composition "Young Homie," said in a statement. "I'm more than honored to be an Epic artist. Working with L.A. Reid -- 'Big Homie' -- is a dream come true. He's a great man and I look forward to the opportunity to share my music with the world."

Marcus, who held on until the final 4, narrowly beating out youngster Rachel Crow in one of the most dramatic eliminations of "The X Factor's" first season, was also pleased with the news. He famously was given two years by his mother to "make it," and was at the end of that timeline when he was brought on Simon Cowell's reality show.

"I am very blessed and grateful to God for the opportunity to become a part of the Epic family," Marcus said. "I am excited about working with my mentor L.A. Reid, and I am ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work. This is history in the making, let's go!"

Astro too, was involved in a dramatic elimination, when he came dangerously close to not performing for the judges, when it was the teen rapper and Stacy Francis on the chopping block. He managed to bounce back and grew a strong fan base due to his skills on the microphone.

"I'm excited to continue my journey with L.A. Reid and his staff at the new Epic Records. The first time L.A. saw me he said I'd be a star, and I can't wait to get to work and prove him right. 2011 was Dope, but 2012 is gonna be Epic," Astro's statement read.

THE DYNAMIC ALYSSA REID AMONG LEADING NOMINEES FOR THE CANADIAN RADIO MUSIC AWARDS.

Awesome! That is what I said in my reply e-mail to the CMW family. Alyssa Reid is such a dynamic young lady and worked very hard in 2011. She deserved it. 5 nominations and the only female solo to sweep it all. Congrats Alyssa. Stay tuned for my interview with her at the Z103.5FM Summer Rush in our Best of 2011. Congrats to all the nominees.

The Canadian Radio Music Awards is pleased to announce the nominations for the 15th Annual edition.
